Discernibility of Burial Mounds in High-Resolution X-Band SAR Images for Archaeological Prospections in the Altai Mountains

چکیده
The Altai Mountains are a heritage-rich archaeological landscape with monuments in almost every valley. Modern nation state borders dissect the region and limit archaeological landscape analysis to intra-national areas of interest. Remote sensing can help to overcome these limitations. Due to its high precision, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data can be a very useful tool for supporting archaeological prospections, but compared to optical imagery, the detectability of sites of archaeological interest is limited. We analyzed the limitations of SAR using TerraSAR-X images in different modes. Based on ground truth, the discernibility of burial mounds was analyzed in different SAR acquisition modes. We show that very-high-resolution TerraSAR-X staring spotlight images are very well suited for the task, with >75% of the larger mounds being discernible, while in images with a lower spatial resolution only a few large sites can be detected, at rates below 50%.

The northern fringes of the Iranian Central Desert (NICD) is a long corridor created due to the proximity of the Alborz Mountains to the north and the Central Desert to the south. For the first time, one of the present authors (HVN) highlighted the importance of the NICD as one of the routes for the dispersal of human populations from Africa to East Asia during Pleistocene epoch. In recent year...
متن کاملDetection of burial mounds in high-resolution satellite images of agricultural land
Many archaeological sites are discovered during building and road construction work, prompting full excavations and delay in construction. In order to detect more cultural heritage sites in advance of construction work, the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage has taken an initiative to develop tools for early detection of potential cultural heritage sites in satellite images. The presen...
متن کاملThe Extended Sub-look Analysis In Polarimetric SAR Data For Ship Detection
The monitoring of maritime areas with remote sensing is essential for security reasons and also for the conservation of environment. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can play an important role in this matter by considering the possibility of acquiring high-resolution images at nighttime and under cloud cover. Recently, the new approaches based on the sub-look analysis for preserving the infor...
متن کاملThe Second Season of the Archaeological Survey of the Qeshm Island, Iran
The second season of the archaeological survey of Qeshm Island was conducted during the winter of 2012, during which the team identified a total of 138 sites. The preliminary analysis of the ceramic assemblage from these sites suggests that 5 sites date to the 3rd millennium B.C.(Bronze Age) and represent the earliest in the directory. The remainder includes 3 Iron Age, 4 Achaemenid, 23 Parthia...

With the development of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in terms of multi-band, multi-polarization and high-resolution data, space radar remote sensing for archaeology has become a potential field for research. Nevertheless, the archaeological detection capability of this technology has so far not been fully assessed. This paper is a pioneering effort to assess the potential of satellite SAR X-b...
